PROGRAM OVERVIEW

ProgressiveHealth of Indiana and University of Evansville Acute Care Physical Therapy Residency

  • 12-month contract
  • Full time salary with benefits

  • Multi-facility exposure in two acute care hospitals
Experiences to include clinical mentoring , didactic course work, interprofessional collaboration, opportunity to teach DPT students at University level of education, observations relevant to acute care setting, research, and community service through a pro-bono clinic.
ABPTRFE has granted ProgressiveHealth of Indiana and University of Evansville Acute Care Residency Program initial accreditation status, effective January 18, 2023 for a period of 5 years through January 2028.

ProgressiveHealth of Indiana and University of Evansville Acute Care Physical Therapy Residency strives to provide enhanced, hands-on experience to develop an in-depth knowledge, evidence-based approach, and the critical thinking skills needed to provide compassionate care to medically complex patients.

PROGRAM SPECIFICS

Financial Aid/Stipends:

Hours of Work

The resident will be in a salaried position which may exceed 40 hours per week but should not exceed 50 hours per week. Resident will be allotted time out of clinic hours to complete didactic course work, however, may be required to complete some activities outside of working hours.

Agreement Duration

The resident contract will be active for 12 months. The resident is not guaranteed a position with the company after that 12-month period, however, if a job opening is available, the resident may submit an application.

Curriculum

The didactic education will be scheduled for 8 hours weekly. There may be a mix of lecture, videos, observation, self-study, and discussion. Distance education may be completed via Medbridge Online Education, Elsevier Performance Manager, DVDs, audio conferencing, journal club meetings via video conferencing, Webinars, and/or other website education sites pertaining to physical therapy education.

Effective learning program:

  • Residents will achieve >80% average on written exams over the year
  • Surgery/Procedure observations opportunity
  • Access to Hospital and University Libraries

Knowledgeable clinical skill

  • Competent to proficient ratings on Live Patient Exams
  • Monthly Journal Club Meetings (September – May) attendance
  • Completion of research
  • Grand Rounds Presentations

Interdisciplinary focus: 

  • Opportunity to interact with nursing staff, physicians, occupational therapists, pharmacists, dieticians, case management, and other ancillary staff through multi-disciplinary rounding
  • Use of clinical skills software in curriculum

The resident will complete community service with the ACErcise program offered by the student-run Ace CARE pro-bono clinic at University of Evansville.

What it takes to be accepted

Admission Criteria

  • Be a graduate of a CAPTE accredited physical therapist program.
  • Provide proof of licensure for the state of Indiana (permanent by the start of residency). If applicant possesses a temporary license, he or she must complete and pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) within 90 days of being granted temporary licensure. Failure to receive permanent licensure prior to the start of the residency may result in dismissal from the Program.
  • Complete an in-person interview (may be able to arrange video interview in certain situations).
  • Application to include the follow items:
    • Submit $50 fee payable to ProgressiveHealth of Indiana–money collected will be used toward continuing education and/or other residency related expenses. Please indicate on memo line the check is for the Residency application fee.
    • Provide proof of current Basic Life Support Certification.
    • Submit an admission statement outlining reason pursuing the residency program and previous experience in the setting (limit to two pages).
    • Submit current curriculum vitae, including all continuing education courses attended, and academic history including transcript from the university in which physical therapy education was received.
    • Submit reference letters from three physical therapists, at least one of whom should be a previous instructor or academician and one from a clinician.
  • Application must be completed in full and submitted through RF-PTCAS, with all items submitted by the deadline of March 15 each year.
